The Brackenfell Mysteries
Nine atmospheric, fair-play mysteries set in 1920s Yorkshire, where village blacksmith Nell Harwood reads iron, wear, repairs, ledgers, journeys, and ordinary working objects as carefully as other people read testimony.
Practical clues, village life, and one long unfinished account
Each volume delivers a complete murder mystery while following Nell Harwood from 1921 to 1929 as she makes Harwood Forge her own. Physical evidence—iron wear, repairs, horses, carts, estate records, freight paperwork, forged documents, telegrams, and boundary fittings—reveals contradictions that gossip cannot explain. Across the series, a missing page from her father’s private ledger continues to cast a shadow over Brackenfell.
Start with Book 1
The Ledger Beneath the Anvil begins in March 1921, when Nell inherits her late father’s forge and a cattle dealer is found dead in her cart shed. A supposedly old tally, impossible journey, and marks on iron that imitate her father’s hand turn practical knowledge into the first clue trail.

The Ledger Beneath the Anvil
Nell Harwood inherits her father’s forge and is drawn into murder when altered accounts, an impossible journey, and ironwork that imitates Josiah Harwood’s hand point toward a carefully constructed lie.
Death in the Lambing Fold
Estate bailiff Frederick Cray is found dead beside an upland lambing shed, and a young shepherd appears to be the obvious suspect. Nell knows the wear on his freshly shod pony and a recently repaired pasture gate contradict the journey the accusation depends on.
Poison After Harvest
A merchant dies after Brackenfell’s harvest supper, but Nell notices he barely ate the food everyone blames. Business accounts, a repaired strongbox, and the timing of his illness suggest the fatal act happened somewhere else.
The Mark on the Cartwheel
A railway goods clerk is murdered after questioning discrepancies in dairy consignments and freight records. A cartwheel repaired by Nell’s father belongs to the wrong cart on paper, and farmers’ money is disappearing in the confusion.
Death at the Fellside Show
An estate steward is murdered during Brackenfell’s annual show. A measuring chain contains replacement links that are too long, and the records falsely claim Harwood Forge made the repair.
The Broken Gate at Low Fell
A murdered property agent, a Harwood-stamped chisel, and a forged repair invoice place Nell herself under suspicion. To clear her name, she must prove not only that the evidence is false, but how someone manufactured it.
The Remount Man’s Last Account
A horse breeder dies after Nell discovers a sale certificate for a horse that is still standing in her forge yard. Wartime remount records connect Thomas Bellamy to the victim, while present-day documents keep refusing to match reality.
The Midsummer Telegram
A parish clerk is murdered after receiving a vague telegram. The message remains but its envelope has vanished, leaving Nell to follow a repaired window catch, a misplaced sewing tool, and an alibi built on someone who was never there.
The Last Iron Account
The missing page from Josiah Harwood’s private ledger returns to the center of the mystery when a retired conveyancing clerk is murdered. Old deeds, surviving ironwork, disputed boundaries, and a proposed land sale force Nell to confront her father’s unfinished truth.
A village changes. Nell’s eye for evidence does not.
From lambing folds and harvest suppers to railway goods yards, agricultural shows, estate sales, horse records, telegrams, and disputed land, Brackenfell’s mysteries grow out of the ordinary systems that keep rural life moving. Nell’s specialist knowledge never replaces police work; it reveals the physical contradictions that make a stronger investigation possible.
Alongside the cases, Nell’s relationship with veterinary surgeon Thomas Bellamy develops slowly, while Inspector Lionel Wardle learns when the village blacksmith can see something an official record has missed.
